[edit] What is MMS

MMS is an application that manages and displays media content such as videos, music, pictures etc. Idealy MMS is used in combination with a TV set in the living room with a remote control. But that's just a proposal.

MMS runs on linux and it's free.

[edit] Introduction

There are a lot media centric solutions for linux out there, and most of them have the TV aspect in the middle of their scope. MMS doesn't! If you like to integrate TV, do it, but you don't have to.

MMS doesn't try to copy existing TV centric applications. They are all good in their own domains, but they are huge and hard to configure, but when it comes to media handling, they aren't even the best anymore. Here comes MMS, because MMS is media and not TV orientated. Take e.g. your remote control and navigate through your media content with just 6 buttons. Create your playlists and hear music, while viewing a slideshow for example.

MMS works on a lot of output devices from ordinary TV sets to high definition TVs and of course X11. Originally MMS started on DXR3 aka Hollywood cards, but since then, due to extensive and steady development MMS is capable of running almost everywhere.

Configuring MMS is quite easy. Edit the file /etc/mms/config, adopt a few setting, and your MMS is fully configured. Additional settings can be done in the context menus of MMS themselves.

MMS is slim. This fact makes MMS interesting for linux distros running on hardware with small resources, such as the Zenega from Bose. Decide at compile time which parts you don't need, and just leave them out.

MMS is constantly evolving to the user needs, because MMS does have yet small but active community, development is heavily taking place. But it's your feedback that makes MMS better. Your comments and ideas shape the future features and the look of MMS, so please feel free to be part of the community.

Try MMS, install it and have a share in the development of MMS. Contribution of programming knowledge, graphical skins like icons, logos, themes and whatever are more than welcome. Please help us making a very good piece of software even better.

Have fun.
